Proud to be a Mustang …Choosing Excellence in all that we do!

January 28, 2007

We hope that you have had a chance to catch up on all of the news in our newest edition of The Ridge.  If you haven’t done so already, check it out on our school website, www.marriottsridge.net.  Our students are doing great things in many different areas.  Just this past week, we had students involved in the Science Fair, art showings, basketball games, wrestling matches, track county championships, cheerleading invitationals, Jukebox practices….the list goes on.

Our Second Annual Science Fair was a great success – students researched, analyzed, and presented projects in many noteworthy areas.  Congratulations to the students listed below on their accomplishments – best wishes to those students who will represent Marriotts Ridge at the County Science, Math, and Technology Fair to be held February 23-24 here at MRHS.  Thanks to Dan Sageman, Science Team Leader, and the Science Team for their efforts!

Our Art Department students are also shining in many arenas.  Kelsey Cole, Ali Kapustin, Kim Allen, Anthony Thomas, and Matt Cornell have had work selected to participate in an exhibit “Howard County, Portrait of a Community” at the Columbia Arts Center.  The following students have submitted entries to the national Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition:  Jiangjiang Cao, Caroline Kessler, Chelsey Curtin, Audra Swearingen, Katelyn Jurney, and Zac Yelnosky.  In addition, Chelsey Curtin received a Faculty Award at the Howard Community College High School Invitational Exhibition.  Congratulations to these students and their teachers, LaVerne Miers-Bond and Jaye Ayres, on their outstanding achievements!

We just received a letter of commendation from the Community Action Council for delivering almost 1,500 pounds of canned goods to the Howard County Food Bank.  Our PTSA Coat Drive was also a great success.  Thanks to the many students, staff members, and families who chose to help those in need by participating in these worthy efforts.

Our PTSA Reflections Chair, Mrs. Mary Jefferson, has notified us that the countywide PTA Reflections Program for 2006-7 will be held this Wednesday, January 31 at 7:30 PM at Wilde Lake High.  As published earlier, congratulations to the following students who will represent MRHS: Elinor Oziel, Naomi Kromer, Abbey Marvenko, Laura Patzer, Felicia Kulp, Caroline Kessler, Molly Malarkey, Jayde Chang, and Colleen Quinlan.  Good Luck to our Mustangs!

Our Student Government (SGA and Class Councils) held a productive meeting on Friday to plan on how to best incorporate the many students who have shown interest in getting more involved with serving on committees to plan upcoming student events, such as pep rallies and spirit weeks.  Interested students may submit a 1-2 page essay on why they would like to participate and outlining one idea they have to further or improve our school community.  Essays need to be turned in by the end of the day on Tuesday …. students selected will participate in our next Student Government Town Meeting to be held in early February. Another countywide leadership opportunity is Leadership U, an exciting leadership development, teambuilding, and community service opportunity for high school students run by Leadership Howard County.  An information session will be held on Sunday, February 4 from 2:30-3:30 at the Glenwood Branch of the Howard County Library.  Two MRHS students – Victoria Peck and Lauren Won – were recognized as graduates in the December 2006 class.

We want to celebrate the accomplishments of one of our Indoor Track team members…congratulations to Jocelyn Henline who won first place in the Pole Vault at the Howard County Championships on Friday evening!  Awesome!

Please remember that report cards will be distributed on Wednesday, January 31.  HSA information from the state department of education will also be sent home.  In addition, PTSA student directories will be coming home to students whose families belong to PTSA…other families can purchase directories at The Hitching Post (school store) or at upcoming school events for $5 or by joining the PTSA.  Congratulations to our Second Quarter Honor Roll students and to all students who showed improvement!  Remember that February Conferences will be held on Thursday evening, February 8 and Friday, February 9.  Pick A Time will open Wednesday morning, January 31 and close Wednesday night, February 7 for conference signup…thanks to our PTSA and Boosters for sponsoring our Faculty Dinner on the 8th.

We are looking forward to Jukebox and the other events coming in February.  Hope to see you around the school.
