Mustang Update

First, I feel that I must mention the fifth anniversary of the tragedy of September 11, 2001.  As I am sure that many of you are doing, continue to keep the families and friends of those who lost their lives on that day in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly tough time.  I must say that what we all are doing … building community, educating our future leaders, reaching out to help one another … is exactly why the United States of America is a great country.

Looking back on our first two weeks, we feel that Year #2 at Marriotts Ridge is off to a successful start.  We are amazed that nearly a month has passed since our teams started practicing and groups, such as the marching band and poms, began rehearsing their routines.  Our teachers have also been hard at work, preparing their rooms, planning new lessons, and getting to know our students and each other.

As we have visited classrooms, we see many wonderful things going on.  The staff members who were added for this year are outstanding.  We are very fortunate to have so many exceptional educators at Marriotts Ridge!

We have thoroughly enjoyed seeing our students from last year and adding this year’s freshman class.  Our juniors are developing into strong leaders … we have been very impressed by our Junior Class Council and SGA.  Our Junior Class organized a super Back to School Dance at Club Ridge … 400 of our students attended!  We are looking forward to working with our Sophomore Class Council and we will be having elections for our Freshman Class Council in the next few weeks.

Congrats to all of our teams who have started the season on a high note.  Special congratulations go to our Varsity Girls Soccer team for being the first team from Marriotts Ridge to beat a “ranked” opponent, defeating #11 Centennial this past week…another “Famous First” at Marriotts Ridge!

Even though our Varsity Football team fell short against Mt. Hebron Friday night, they exhibited great sportsmanship and team pride right to the end …. their perseverance and that great scrimmage victory over Hammond the week before gives us all great optimism about their season.  We must also highlight the awesome crowd at Friday night’s game.  Do you believe that the scoreboard was turned off accidentally by the official working in the Press Box and that is why it was off for almost an entire quarter?  AAAHH ..we intend to make sure that does not happen again … I must also mention that our sound system is almost in operation due to a generous donation from a local businessman.  We must also commend the fantastic performances by the marching band, poms, and cheerleaders … what a wonderful night to be a Mustang!

We hosted a Club Fair for over 30 clubs and student government groups last week during Advisory.  All of our students participated in this event, getting the chance to sign up for any clubs that they might be interested in joining.  We have had several students ask about adding new clubs … students should try to find a staff member willing to act as a sponsor and then write a short proposal to the Administration.  We can’t wait to see what our clubs and student government organizations accomplish this year!

Looking ahead, we have Dr. Michael Fowlin coming this week to Marriotts Ridge.  His topic is “You don’t know me until you know me.”  He is an entertaining, motivating speaker with an important message.  We strongly encourage our families to come out this Thursday night at 7:30 PM to hear Dr. Fowlin … this program will take place in the Auditorium.  He will speak to our students on Friday afternoon.  He is working with two of our feeder schools … Mt. View and Folly Quarter … also.  Please put this great community event on your calendar.

Our PTSA Back to School Night will be held on Tuesday, September 19 at 7 PM. Please make sure that you have reserved this date.  Come to find out what our PTSA and Boosters are doing for our students and school community.  Show your support for these two very worthwhile groups by joining these organizations that night if you haven’t done so already.  There will be plenty of spirit wear for sale.  Most importantly, this is a great opportunity to meet our teachers … I am sure that you will be impressed!

A few more notes regarding Back to School Night …we really hope to start on time at 7 in the Auditorium so if you can get there a few minutes early, we would greatly appreciate it. Please park at our school or at Mt. View Middle and not on Woodford Drive as it is a “No Parking” zone.  We hope to finish by 8:45 PM so that our teachers can get some rest for the next day.  Finally, our PTSA and Boosters would be upset with me if I didn’t throw in one more plug to bring your checkbooks to support all of the good things that they are doing for Marriotts Ridge.

We are off to a great start …looking forward to seeing you at the games, events, and especially Back to School Night…GO MUSTANGS!
