School year 2012-13 is Rosalie Bowen’s 49th year of service to students, staff, and parents. Her first year as a mathematics teacher was at Arbutus Junior High School in Baltimore County; the next three years were at Holston Valley High School in Bristol, Tennessee. Her most recent 44 years have been here in Howard County where she has served in six of the high schools including Glenelg, Wilde Lake (she was an original staff member), Glenelg (20 years later), Hammond, Oakland Mills, Howard, and Marriotts Ridge. Here in Mustang territory, Mrs. Bowen works directly with all students. Specifically for discipline, she works with students whose last names begin with A through H. Relative to the curriculum, she works with the curricular departments of Mathematics, World Languages, and Informational Services. Mrs. Bowen is also responsible for administering all assessments including local, quarterly assessments; state HSAs in Algebra, Biology, and English 10 in October, January, and April (seniors only), and May (Government will be added back in May 2013); national PSAT testing for all sophomores and juniors in October; and additional assessments or surveys requested by the HCPSS. Throughout the school year, she supervises the program for Bridge Plan Projects in algebra, biology, and English for the Maryland Bridge Plan for Academic Validation. In addition to the testing program, Mrs. Bowen is the liaison with the twenty-two bus drivers and supervises early morning arrivals and afternoon departures. Further, she coordinates substitute teacher coverage. As an Admissions Field Representative, Mrs. Bowen represents the United States Military Academy at West Point to the students of Howard County. In this position she works with students interested in West Point and shares her knowledge and experience with students (and their parents) interested in the other four military academies including the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy, the Coast Guard Academy, or the Merchant Marine Academy. She represents West Point annually at the Howard County College Fair, which this year will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2012, from 1-4 PM at Howard Community College and at the HCPSS Military Night on Thursday, March 14, 2013, from 7 to 9 PM at River Hill High School. For service to students and their families, to the HCPSS, and to the Maryland and National Associations of Secondary School Principals (Mrs. Bowen chaired the Maryland Assistant Principals’ Committee for MASSP and coordinated its annual conference for Maryland assistant principals from 1991-2006), Mrs. Bowen was awarded the 1997 Maryland Assistant Principal of the Year award by MASSP/NASSP. “Failure is not an option” … Apollo 13 Flight Director Kranz
